• If there is 30 seconds or less between lightning and thunder, go to a safer place. Wait at least 30 minutes from hearing thunder before leaving the safer place.
• Thunderstorms produce high winds, hail, and lightning.
• In 2007, 45 people were struck and killed by lightning.
• Last year in 2007, 98% of people struck by lightning were outside. Here are some other facts:
1. 89% were male
2. 30% were men between the ages of 20 – 25
3. 25% were under a tree

• A safe vehicle is a hard topped car, SUV, minivan, bus, tractor, etc. Convertibles are not safe.
• Hail causes $1 billion in crop and property damage each year.
• Flash floods are powerful and develop quickly.
• Flash floods can also occur anywhere along rivers or creeks.

Thunderstorms can be very severe. There are at least 16 million thunderstorms a year. They form from moisture, unstable air, and lift. Moisture forms clouds and rain. Unstable air forms warm air that can rise rapidly. Lift forms cold or warm fronts, sea breezes, mountains, or the sun’s heat are capable of lifting air to help form thunderstorms.
